The background photo is displayed and where there are active grid-squares (which have already been purchased) they are filled by a section of the main photograph, which makes them more noticeable.
These active squares, when a user's mouse passes over them, show each donor's name, message of support and optional photo.
This makes an interesting read for website visitors, who can discover all the messages of the previous donors.
